Chinatown

The Chinese came to Singapore to escape poverty, war, and famine in their homeland. They were settled in the area south of the Singapore River. The shoreline known as "Telok Ayer" (Water Bay) became the first landing point for the new Chinese immigrants, where they set up their first homes, businesses, temples, and clan associations.

The population of the Chinese grew very quickly since the arrival of the first junk arrived from Amoy, China in 1821.

They brought with them their cultural practices, religions, and social organisations, which are still evident in modern Singapore. Though some immigrants made fortunes, many more were destined for a hard life.
