The Story of Singapura

According to one source, the Sejarah Melayu or Malay Annals, a prince from the Sri Vijaya Empire, Sang Nila Utama, was sailing the seas in search of a site to build a new city. He arrived at the sandy shores of an island and caught sight of a strange animal, which, he was told, was a "Singa" (Sanskrit word for lion).

Sang Nila Utama felt that it was a good omen and decided to build his new city here, naming it Singapura - the Lion City
