The
Story of Singapura
Singapore's history goes back a long way back to
the time of divine kings, royal courts, and ancient traditions when Singapore
was part of the Malay empires of the Malay World.
Singapore's early history is shrouded in mystery and legend as there are
very few written records...
According to one source, the Sejarah Melayu or Malay Annals, a prince
from the Sri Vijaya Empire, Sang Nila Utama, was sailing the seas in search
of a site to build a new city. He arrived at the sandy shores of an island
and caught sight of a strange animal, which, he was told, was a "Singa"
(Sanskrit word for lion).
Sang Nila Utama felt that it was a good omen and decided to build his
new city here, naming it Singapura - the Lion City
