Kampong Glam

"Kampong" is a Malay word for "Village"

Kampong Glam is named after the Glam Tree that was found in abundance in that area
After the signing of the treaty in 1819, Sultan Hussein was given a substantial piece of land
in Kampong Glam where he built his Palace and Mosque.

Many Muslims, settled around the Sultan's compound. They included the Javanese, Bawanese, and Bugis from Indonesia, the Arabs and Indian Muslims.

In 1824, The Sultan was forced to sign another treaty ceding Singapore to the British for posterity.
The descendents of Sultan Hussein continued to live in the Palace, known as Istana Kampong Glam, until late 1999.

Today Kampong Glam still retains its uniquely Islamic character. It continues to be the regional hub for Muslim pilgrims on their way to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, for the Haj. (Holy Pilgrimage) They stop at Kampong Glam to purchase the many items required for the journey.
