...During the War...

World War II
The British Empire in Singapore began to crumble with the onslaught of World War II.

"Asia for the Asiatics"
The Japanese launches their invasion of Southeast Asia in December 1941. By 15 February 1942, Singapore had been conquered and was to remain a Japanese bastion till 12 September 1945

The Japanese Occupation
The years of Japanese Occupation were years of hardship where the average Singaporean faced starvation and poverty.

"The Impregnable Fortress"
The ease which the Japanese took Singapore despite British promises that the island was an impregnable fortress, shook the confidence the people had in their colonial masters.
This spurred the desire for self-government and independence.
