...They
came from afar...
The Immigrants' Story
The early immigrants of Singapore played a critical role in her growth
with their sacrifices and contributions.
These brave immigrants braved dangers and uncertainties in long journeys
from far away lands to arrive in Singapore. Most of the people came initially
to find work and make their fortunes before returning home to their families.
However, many decided to settle down in Singapore, bringing their families
here from their homeland.
They first settled in the area around the Singapore River until it became
too crowded. Raffles wanted Singapore to be a beautiful well organised
city, where all may live in harmony.
He drew up a Town Plan in 1822 allocating to each ethnic group, a separate
quarter to live in. The boundaries drawn by the Town Plan is still highly
visible today.
..then
the war came...
